Learn About Choosing Flooring

In ancient times, floors weren’t anything close to what we know them to be today. They were just a patch of tamped down dirt that was sometimes strewn with unworked materials, such as hay and straw for people to walk on. While traditional dirt floors are still used in some parts of the world, there is a huge selection of flooring options available today. And, we understand that choosing the right flooring type for your home or other building can be confusing. That’s why we created this website. Although we’re not flooring specialists, we can provide you with some useful information about the different types of flooring. This information can guide you through the flooring selection process but also help you identify the right flooring contractor for your needs. Welcome aboard!

The Dos and Don'ts Of Cleaning Limestone Floors

by Ella Lawrence

Limestone floor tiles are in demand for Australian homes due to their natural beauty and hard-wearing qualities. In addition, their durability makes them ideal for family homes containing active children and numerous pets. However, limestone floors only retain their beauty if you clean them regularly. Therefore, use these tips for cleaning and maintaining limestone floors, and it will always look as stunning as installation day.

Do Request Sealant

Sealant on limestone floors provides a barrier between the stone and daily dirt. Some homeowners attempt to save money by doing the sealant process themselves. However, this cost-saving measure backfires if the sealant is not applied correctly and uniformly. Your flooring contractor knows which product works best in each Australian environment. For example, what works well in the dry heat of central Australia may not work as well in the tropical humidity of Queensland. They also know the technique for uniform application. Ordering sealant as part of the installation process provides the most effective protective barrier.

Don't Ignore Spills

Sealant provides a protective barrier, but liquid spills left sitting on stone tiles may permanently stain or discolour this covering. The discolouration is most likely to occur if liquids like red wine or coffee sit on the surface. Therefore, use a soft cloth to absorb the spill immediately. Microfibre cloths are best as they do not scratch the stone surface. Contact the flooring installer to ask for stain removal advice if a stain occurs. For example, a light stain may be removable using toothpaste. However, a deeper discolouration requires a poultice that draws the blemish to the surface. Follow their advice given on which products work best for your staining issue.

Do Carefully Choose Cleaning Products

Not all floor cleaning products work best with stone flooring, so it is critical you carefully consider your choices before buying them. For example, limestone is sensitive to anything acidic. Therefore, a citrus-based floor cleaning smells yet, but its acidic properties will damage the stone's surface. Additionally, acidic floor cleaners dissolve the sealant protection, leaving your stone floor open to permanent damage. The ideal limestone floor cleaner is pH neutral and dissolves easily in water. Mopping the floor with a soft-head mop and a gentle detergent is all that is required to keep the floor clean.

Limestone flooring lasts for many years when cared for correctly. Use these tips to get started with your limestone floor caring regime.
