Learn About Choosing Flooring

In ancient times, floors weren’t anything close to what we know them to be today. They were just a patch of tamped down dirt that was sometimes strewn with unworked materials, such as hay and straw for people to walk on. While traditional dirt floors are still used in some parts of the world, there is a huge selection of flooring options available today. And, we understand that choosing the right flooring type for your home or other building can be confusing. That’s why we created this website. Although we’re not flooring specialists, we can provide you with some useful information about the different types of flooring. This information can guide you through the flooring selection process but also help you identify the right flooring contractor for your needs. Welcome aboard!

Benefits of Engineered Timber Floors for a Home

by Ella Lawrence

Timber flooring gives rooms a warm and homey ambience. Rather than installing solid timber planks, you could install engineered boards, the benefits of which follow.

Can Be Refinished

Engineered planks consist of an inner core material using plywood or fibreboard, which is finished on top with a thin veneer of attractive hardwood. Because the top layer is a solid wood slice, it can be re-sanded over the years to remove dents and scratches. Thus, you can finish the flooring to look like new as you can with solid timber. The number of times you can re-sand engineered boards depends on the thickness of the top veneer layer. The thicker the veneer is, the more times it can take sanding. Other flooring options, such as tiles, laminate and vinyl, don't offer this refinishing capacity.

No Nasty Fumes

Engineered planks are covered with a clear coating during manufacture so that contractors can lay the flooring and have it ready to go. They don't have to apply various stains and sealants that release toxins in your home, degrading the atmosphere. As a result, the installation process will be completed more quickly. You can often walk on the flooring within several hours.

Accommodates Weather Shifts

Solid timber expands and contracts as the weather changes, which can cause floorboards to press too tightly or leave gaps. Because of engineered flooring's unique construction, these boards don't suffer from the same fate. The inner core of plywood or fibreboard is less reactive. Additionally, engineered planks lock together like jigsaw pieces, and this construction allows them additional room to move. Solid timber, though, is nailed or secured to the subbase, which gives less flexibility.

Design Variations

Engineered floorboards offer a vast array of different colours and plank widths, providing you with the freedom to create your preferred look. The topmost veneer layer uses various species with different grain patterns and shades, ranging from creamy to red to coffee timber shades. Additionally, you can choose from multiple plank widths. You could even lay a floor of variable boards to evoke a rustic and authentic feel.

Thus, engineered flooring offers a range of benefits. You can refinish the flooring to make it look new. Additionally, you won't have to suffer the toxic fumes that hardwood timber can emit after installation. You can choose between different colour and size boards to create diverse aesthetics. Because of engineered flooring's unique construction, it's more stable and less reactive than solid planks, so the panels fit together more neatly and consistently.
