Learn About Choosing Flooring

In ancient times, floors weren’t anything close to what we know them to be today. They were just a patch of tamped down dirt that was sometimes strewn with unworked materials, such as hay and straw for people to walk on. While traditional dirt floors are still used in some parts of the world, there is a huge selection of flooring options available today. And, we understand that choosing the right flooring type for your home or other building can be confusing. That’s why we created this website. Although we’re not flooring specialists, we can provide you with some useful information about the different types of flooring. This information can guide you through the flooring selection process but also help you identify the right flooring contractor for your needs. Welcome aboard!

Reasons To Install Natural Stone Wall Tiles In Your Kitchen

by Ella Lawrence

When redesigning a kitchen, you'll need to select a material for the splashback and walls. One possibility is to cover these areas with natural stone wall tiles. Here are several reasons for doing so.

Wide Choice

Natural stone is ideal for coordinating all the elements in a kitchen, such as splashbacks, floors and countertops. Rock is available in a wide range of hues, making it easy to create a harmonious design. Blue, tan, white, green and grey are just several shades to choose from for your wall tiles. Additionally, each variety of stone comes in different blends, so the options are multiplied if you consider all the possibilities, including slate, granite and travertine.

Each Slab Is Unique

The combinations of streaks and patterns within each wall tile is unique—a result of a specific history. Over time, rocks crack and develop fissures, and these gaps fill with water and local minerals, adding various colours in the process. Because this happens in distinct ways over thousands of years, no two slabs are the same. This means that your kitchen will have exclusive and one-of-a-kind tiles.

Different Patterns

You can lay stone tiles in different patterns, using various shapes and sizes in combination. Basketweave, herringbone and running bond are just a few options. These patterns add visual interest to the surface, and you'll have more fun designing your kitchen with these extra choices.

Easy Maintenance

Stone-tile splashbacks are easy to maintain. By following recommendations for sealing, the rock will have protection from mishaps. Remember, however, to wipe up spills promptly before they have a chance to stain or etch the stone. Some varieties, such as granite, are more robust and less likely to scratch or stain. Others, like marble and travertine, need more care in removing acidic spills like tomato juice and wine promptly.

A benefit of tiling, in general, is that you can replace individual tiles should one break or crack. By purchasing spares during installation, you'll always have handy replacements. As stone does tend to vary, this strategy will ensure the consistency of your splashback or wall.

Coordinate With Outside

If your kitchen area leads out to a patio, you could install similar tiles in both regions. Slate, granite and travertine, for instance, come in floor tiles as well. Repeating a colour and texture both inside and outside will create a more seamless transition. You can further add to design cohesion by spreading the stone in other garden areas like paths or driveways.
